Bristol is bursting with life. Whether you are visiting for a few
hours or staying for a fortnight, this exciting city has so much for you
to see and do. From a Catholic perspective, the Celebrate 2008 weekend
at St Bede's College is very close to the oldest church in the area - St
Mary on the Quay. An imposing church with a massive Corinthian portico
stood on the waterfront when it was completed in 1840, hence the name. The
River Frome in front of it was later covered over. The church was built by
a movement led by Edward Irving, known as the Catholic Apostolic Church,
but was taken over by the Roman Catholic Church a few years later. It was
then served by Jesuits until a few years ago, but is now run by Father Michael
Cleary & others, of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD)
